Gypsum false ceiling is sound insulated, lightweight, soft, fire resistance and thermally insulated.

These come in square and rectangular panels of varied sizes.

These boards are suspended with a supporting framework below the ceiling.

These can be easily painted, laminated, or wallpapered as per requirement. for better finishing and aesthetics of the room.

Plaster of Paris (POP) is used majorly false ceiling for the interior of the buildings. POP ceilings very similar to gypsum ceilings but are less durable.

POP false ceiling is attractive, needs regular maintenance, and develops cracks within a first few years.

POP is widely used as it is excellent insulators for both heat and cold.

It helps one achieve smooth and clean false ceiling design.

Note: We don’t recommend using POP false ceiling in your bedroom. It’s cheaper than Gypsum false ceiling, so if you’re short on budget you can use POP ceiling otherwise don’t. It may develop cracks within a few years and will need regular maintenance.

Wood is used in the false ceiling due to its natural beautiful patterns and textures.

It is one of the costliest options for a false ceiling but can be used as a part of a false ceiling to cut the cost.

Various finishes can be used for wooden false ceiling. Disadvantages of the wooden false ceiling are warping, termite protection and thermal control in the interior with balanced humidity.

You can mix up wood + gypsum to add more creativity to your design.

Tough it is generally not used directly in the bedroom false ceiling but can be used in bathrooms or dressing area.

galvanized iron and aluminium are widely used because of its strength and durability.

The cost is generally low as it is easy to install as well as access.

Synthetic Leather or Cloth Ceiling

Leather or cloth ceilings are nowadays widely used in the false ceiling due to its lightweight and appealing character.

Freedom in design with beautiful aesthetics at a low price makes this material a prime choice of many designers in today’s era.

The disadvantage of this ceiling is it requires regular cleaning dust may be layered over a certain time.

You can also use metal and gypsum together for the false ceiling design for your bedroom

You can also add an element of glass to your ceiling design. However, glass ceilings are not in trend right now but huge in 80’s and 90’s. If you’re old enough you’ve probably seen these glass ceilings in Bollywood movies.

We do not recommend using glass ceiling anymore. They hard to install, the finish is usually not very good and very hard to maintain.

You can use various types of glass for the ceiling. Use the back painted, transparent, translucent glass.

Again your glass ceiling need not be complete glass. You can add pieces of glass in the gypsum ceiling.

Cloth ceilings serve aesthetics more than functionality. They may to insulate your room heat or cold but will definitely add glamour to your bedroom design.

You may have seen cloth ceilings in palaces. They used to be huge in that era when a lot of modern materials we have today were not easily accessible.

Honestly, we never installed a cloth ceiling in any of our projects as of now, but will definitely try at some point in time. If you decide to try the cloth ceiling design for a bedroom, please share the photos with us. We’d love to see.

How to design a false ceiling and false ceiling terminology (i.e. cove lighting etc.)

Segregate the areas before designing a false ceiling for your bedroom.

For example, working area, or dressing or walkway can have a separate division through cove or separate plane.

Provide separations through false ceiling only where needed as more of it can clutter your vision.

Match the lines of your ceiling or contrast it with the plan below for better designs.

Cove lighting is basically indirect lighting directed upward from an interior cornice or the like toward a cove at the edge of the ceiling. Cove lights add elegance and glamour to your bedroom interiors.

However, they’re also harder to maintain and clean. So, if you’re not a fan of cove lighting, you can add led surface light fixtures to get indirect lighting effect without having a cove.
